What a strong answer sounds like
Names a specific project unprompted. The motivation is personal — pride, curiosity, or care — not external pressure. Can describe a measurable difference their extra effort made.
Red flag
The example is just doing their normal job. They describe doing more because their manager asked. They cannot name a specific project.
Walk me through the most difficult professional period you have been through. How did you navigate it?
What a strong answer sounds like
Names the difficulty specifically. Describes concrete steps they took proactively. Shows learning and movement through it. Does not minimise the difficulty or blame others for it.
Red flag
Blames the situation entirely on others. The learning is vague ("I learned to communicate better"). They waited for someone else to fix it.
What does your week look like in terms of professional development outside of what your employer has asked you to do?
What a strong answer sounds like
Has an immediate, specific answer. Reading, building something, a course they chose themselves, a community they participate in. Self-initiated and ongoing.
Red flag
Nothing specific. Mentions mandatory company training as their answer. "I try to keep work and life separate" without a counterpoint.
Tell me about a time you stayed with a problem much longer than most people would have. Why did you keep going?
What a strong answer sounds like
Describes an internal drive to solve it — not obligation. Specific problem, specific persistence, specific outcome. Can explain the moment they chose not to give up.
Red flag
"I just do what needs doing." No specific example. The persistence was because their manager told them to keep going.
What are you working on right now that nobody asked you to?
What a strong answer sounds like
Answers immediately. Specific. Could be a side project, a skill, a piece of research. Shows they are in motion without external direction.
Red flag
Pauses for a long time. "Nothing right now." Falls back to work tasks when the question specifically asked about unprompted work.
Humble
Coachable, collaborative, honest about what they do not know.
Tell me about the biggest professional mistake you have made. What happened and how did you handle it?
What a strong answer sounds like
Owns it completely without qualifying language. No blame assigned to circumstances or others. Describes a specific change they made as a result. Told their manager or team proactively rather than waiting to be found out.
Red flag
"I can't really think of one." Spends more time explaining why it happened than what they did about it. The lesson is abstract ("I learned to be more careful").
Describe a time you received feedback that was genuinely difficult to hear. What did you do with it?
What a strong answer sounds like
The feedback was specific and critical, not mild. They sat with it rather than immediately defending themselves. Changed a specific behaviour as a direct result. Can describe the change and its impact.
Red flag
"My managers have always been happy with my work." Describes defending themselves first. The feedback they chose was mild. No measurable behaviour change.
Tell me about a situation at work where someone else's approach turned out to be better than yours. What happened?
What a strong answer sounds like
Can name the situation without being prompted. Credits the other person specifically and generously. Adopted their approach. Does not undermine the story by qualifying it.
Red flag
Cannot think of an example. Tells the story in a way that makes their original approach sound reasonable and the other person's only marginally better. Passive framing ("I was open to their ideas").
Walk me through a time you had to ask for help when you were struggling with something.
What a strong answer sounds like
Asked early rather than at the point of crisis. Specific about what they were struggling with and who they asked. No embarrassment about needing help — treats it as the right thing to do.
Red flag
"I usually figure things out myself." Asked too late, when the situation had already become a problem. Frames asking for help as a weakness they overcame rather than a skill they have.
Tell me about a time you changed your mind on something you had a strong view about. What shifted your thinking?
What a strong answer sounds like
Specific position, specific new information or perspective, specific moment of change. Not defensive about having been wrong. Curious about what caused the shift.
Red flag
Cannot think of an example. The "change of mind" is trivial. "I'm always open to new perspectives" with no concrete story behind it.
Hungry
Ambitious. Self-directed. The quality that turns a six-month hire into a six-year one.
Where do you want to be in three years? What specific steps have you already started taking toward that?
What a strong answer sounds like
Clear and specific vision. Active steps already underway — not waiting for it to happen. The vision connects logically to the role they are applying for.
Red flag
"I just want to do a good job wherever I am." Extremely vague. The vision and the role they are interviewing for have no obvious connection. No active steps taken yet.
Tell me about something you have taught yourself in the last twelve months. Why that particular skill or subject?
What a strong answer sounds like
Specific. Self-chosen. A clear reason connected to where they want to go. Can demonstrate or describe what they have built with it.
Red flag
Nothing. Or a mandatory company training course. Treats self-directed learning as unusual rather than normal.
Describe a time you took on a responsibility that was not in your job description. What motivated you?
What a strong answer sounds like
Identified a gap themselves. Took ownership without prompting. The motivation is internal — a problem they cared about, not a desire for credit.
Red flag
Nothing comes to mind. The example was assigned to them by a manager. The motivation was "it was good for my career" without caring about the actual problem.
Walk me through the most ambitious thing you have done professionally. What made you decide to go for it?
What a strong answer sounds like
Shows genuine risk tolerance. A clear decision point where they chose the harder path. Can articulate what drove the decision beyond "it seemed like a good opportunity."
Red flag
Passive narrative — things happened to them rather than them making it happen. The ambition described is modest. No decision point they can identify.
Tell me about a time you pushed for something at work when it would have been easier to stay quiet.
What a strong answer sounds like
Took a clear stand. Specific situation. Stakes that made it genuinely easier not to push. Can describe the outcome even if they did not get what they pushed for.
Red flag
Cannot think of an example. "I prefer to keep my head down and focus on my work." The example they give is trivial.
Score guide
- 40–50: Strong A Player signal. Prioritise.
- 30–39: Good hire. Probe the gaps before proceeding.
- 20–29: Borderline. Discuss with your team before deciding.
- Below 20: Not the right fit for this role at this time.
